Champion New York & Champion, OH
|
General Henry Champion had a large interest in the Connecticut Land
Company. He had subscribed over $87,000 in the purchase of lands in New
York and Ohio.
When Gen. Champion purchased a large tract of land in what was known as
the Town of Mexico. Settlements began in the area around 1798. The town
was incorporated in 1801.
General Champion was honored to have the town named after him. He
donated a two acre parcel as the Village Green and had a bell cast from
silver dollars made to ring in the local church. The bell still exists to this
day and is rung on special occasions.
Champion Grange, former Church
Champion Ohio was another one of General Champion's tracts that became a settlement
in the 1800's. The township had later broken into Warren, the county seat of Trumbull
County and Champion became part of the district. In addition the area known as
Champion Heights is a part of the Champion Township.
Today the township has no government function, but is run by a three member Board of
Trustees and has a Township Clerk.
One of the most interesting part of these communities is the ties they share to the Champion Family. Most notably in Champion NY, the
Champion Family Foundation is working with the community on a few projects that include a statue of General Champion, and the Village Green
revitalization as well.
In 2009, members of the Champion Family will be in Champion NY to help celebrate the 4th of July. There is a parade through town and sure to be
a great year to help celebrate our nation's birth; especially when the Town's namesake took such an active role in helping us achieve that goal.
HELP RAISE FUNDING FOR GENERAL CHAMPION STATUE
In honor of General Henry Champion, and as a gift to the town of Champion New York, we are trying to raise funding for a statue of the General
for the town. This project has great meaning for us, as the General's Champion's contributions of the Village Green and Church Bell are reminders
still in existence today of his great appreciation for this place.
We are looking to raise between $20-25 thousands dollars for this project. It will entail an 8' high marble statue and base, with a plaque dedicating
the statue to the town in his honor.
Those who wish to participate, please contact Christopher Fernandes at cfernandes@mashiyu.com for more information on how you can help. Your
pledge to this project will not only be a tremendous help, but all donors will also be recognized for their contributions on the base as well.
