The Champion Family of Connecticut
|

The Champion Family has been in Connecticut since 1647, with the arrival of Henry Champion. Henry came to the Colony of
Connecticut from Norfolk, Norwich, England. The Champion Family can then be traced back to around the 14th century in the
United Kingdom, where it is believed the immigrated from France; possibly French Huguenots.
Henry Champion came over to the Colony of Connecticut around 1647. He originally settled in Old Saybrook and later settled
in Lyme, where the family grew from and spread out all throughout the United States. His first wife, Sarah Champion, whose
origin is not known had died and he remarried quite late in his life to Deborah Jones. It was said that Ms. Jones had married
Henry for his money, since he did in fact make a good living for that time period.
Henry had two sons, Henry II and Thomas. The third, Stephen had died young. Thomas' branch of the family would later
move on to be politicians, Federalists and prominent figures of Connecticut lost along the way and almost an extinct male
line.
1647-2008
Henry II's line would grow profusely to not only spread through New England and westward, but also become staples of their communities in
addition to marrying into some of New England's oldest families. This includes descendants of the Mayflower & Massachusetts Bay Colony and even
relations to Royal Governors and the infamous Borden family.
One great point to mention is the families history of living quite old for their times. Henry I outlived Henry II passing away at the ripe old age of 97
years old in 1709. Throughout the family, many members to the present have lived into their nineties.
For the Champion's of Connecticut, Henry seemed to be the most popular and respected name. Even amongst the daughters. Henry Champion
Deming was named for his grandfather. The eldest male line continued this tradition up to Henry VI, who died in 1825 unmarried. Thomas' line also
took the namesake and carried it through his son, Henry I through Henry III. During research on this family, you will come across quite a few Henry's.
